When integrating any new technology into the classroom there are a number of considerations. One that can easily be overlooked initially is that of security. With the recent boom in AI technologies I chose to focus on a brief overview of pitfalls associated to integrating AI technologies into educational environments.
Deepthy Jose (2024) highlights the risks associated with widespread AI integration in Data Privacy and Security Concerns I AI-Integrated Educational Platforms.
While AI has the potential to take on a transformative role in education there is an unmet need to balance innovation with data privacy and security. The significant improvement of AI models in recent years has encouraged more software developers to integrate AI into their product by default. These integrations have come with the uncomfortable reality that AI improvement is often based on the amount of data that is collected. AI models train on large amounts of data by maintaining unclear data collection practices and insufficient user consent mechanisms.
AI has the potential to transform education in a positive way, but the safeguards are not in place. Users and administrators should be aware of data collection practices as well as the limitations of current AI models.
